Hi guys! sometimes people ask me for Korean convenience store food recommendations, so I thought I’d make this video and tell you about some things you should try at the Korean convenience store. I’m went o G25, but you can probably find these items at other Korean convince stores.
What to buy at a Korean Convenience Store
Ramen egg
I’m always looking for a healthy snack and I like to get these perfectly cooked ramen eggs. I hate eating egg yolk but I will eat the yolk on these eggs is just so buttery and jelly like, just like a ramen egg. The egg is also perfectly salted. But make sure you get this brand or you might end up with a super hard boiled egg that’s almost like an eraser. This egg is special and it actually reminds me of the eggs that I used to buy at Family mart in Japan.
Flavored Milk
In the US you’re probably used to drinking chocolate milk or strawberry milk as an exotic flavor but Korea has a ton of other milk flavors. The classic is this binggrae banana milk but they have other milk flavors in cute little bottles and boxes. Sometimes you’ll find seasonal flavors like right now they have orange milk, and I believe there was a purple milk – not sure if it was taro?
Cheese fish candy
I know, this sounds really weird but my kids just gobble it up. The texture is sort of like string cheese but a little drier, and you really can’t taste the fish but I like how it adds a bit of extra protein to the snack.
Drinks in a bag
Coffee in a bag, or any drink in a bag for that matter. Korean convenience stores have a whole selection. I was a little skeptical but this coffee was actually pretty good. You can’t compare it to freshly brewed coffee from your artisanal coffee shop but you know what? It’s all right. Not at all terrible.
Vitamin Drinks
Vitamin drinks for hangovers, headaches, and illness. I have a tendency to liken these drinks to Red Bull, but they are not at all like that. Yes, they are in the same section as the energy drinks like Bacchus but here, there are drinks that are supposed to help you with a headache, hangover, or just give you an extra shot of Vitamin C. My husband likes to drink these for a little extra boost when he’s not feeling well.
Yogurt drinks
You’ve probably heard of the yogurt drinks that appeared in the Netflix Movie, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” but have you tried these flavored ones in cartons? These are are sweet and good. You should get one of these if you plan to eat something spicy like ramen to cool your mouth down when you’re done eating.
Gimbap and Nigiri
These gimbap rolls are not bad at all. They are quite filling and make for a good meal to take on a picnic or on the go. I like the tuna kimchi one. You can also find nigiri here with Korean flavors like Korean BBQ, bibimbap, and the classic tuna mayo. They are not as fresh as the ones from a Japanese convenience store where they are delivered fresh every morning, but if you’re looking for a cheap and easy meal, you can just pick up one or two of these.
Cheese bread
My kids love these and they make for a good breakfast combined with that hard boiled egg i talked about earlier. These kind of remind me of Kings Hawaiian rolls with a kraft single in the middle but a little more crumbly and not as chewy. They are just savory little bread bites that are great for snacking
Instant Ramen
I would be remiss to talk about Korean convince stores without recommending that you get ramen here. Ramen really deserves its own separate video and I try not to eat too much because of the high sodium content but these are one of my guilty pleasures. You can find all sorts of flavors – beef, seafood, chicken, spicy, kimchi, jja jjang myun, there’s even western flavors like spaghetti and mac and cheese.
Specialty Kitkats
These specialty kitkats typically aren’t sold in grocery stores. you will have to go to the convenience store to find them. Lately i’m loving this strawberry tiramisu kitkat. I don’t usually like white chocolate but this one is so fragrant and smells like strawberry and it actually tastes like tiramisu.
Dried Apple Mango
This reminds me a lot of the “Just Mango” snack from Trader Joe’s. It’s one of my healthy convenience store staples. There is no sugar added but it’s naturally sweet and good.
Korean Snack Guide
You may have noticed that I completely bypassed the snacks and that’s because I already did a video on my favorite Korean snacks so check that you if you haven’t seen it already.
